Where Does It Go?

Each person produces 100 bags of rubbish every year & it's increasing!
In South Staffordshire the waste that we throw into our wheeled bin is put into large holes
in the ground and buried. This is called landfilling.

In South Staffordshire
• 21% Recycled
• 22% Composted
• 57% Landfill

Every year South Staffordshire Council collects enough waste from its residents
to fill a Football Stadium, weighing as much as 5,000 Double-decker Buses.

The amount of rubbish is increasing and costing more to get rid of,
which you will have to fund through your taxes!

Extra disposal sites will need to be found if we don't reduce our waste.
These sites will have to be near someone! Might this be you?

We therefore need your help to Watch your waste & recycle taking more responsibility for the amount
of rubbish we create! Otherwise our children will be left with the problems & pollution our waste creates.

Recycling

Our residents within South Staffordshire are doing an excellent job recycling their waste.

We are now recycling over 3 times the amount we were two years ago. With your help the waste we throw away has been reduced and we are on target for sending 40% less waste to landfill. This will result in significant environmental benefits as landfill produces large volumes of methane gas, which is a major contributor to climate change.

Recycling means using things that have already been used, to make new things.
It also includes reusing things as they are, and giving things you no longer need to other people to reuse.

What happens to the recyclables we collect?

In South Staffordshire paper and card is sent together to a mill where it is reprocessed into more packaging and fibre products. Cans are separated between aluminium and steel where they are then melted down and remoulded to form new products. Plastic bottles are sorted and are then shredded and reprocessed to form new plastic products such
as garden furniture and fleece clothing. Mixed glass is used as aggregate in the construction industry, saving further materials being removed from the earth. Garden waste is composted into nutrient rich, environmentally friendly compost & used locally. All of the above processes save energy through the reduced need to extract transport and process raw materials.
